When to start a bar exam accommodations evaluation

Bar exam accommodations timelines vary by jurisdiction. Most state bars require applications months before the exam date. Some jurisdictions process requests in weeks; others take longer. Starting the evaluation 3 to 4 months before the application deadline provides room for testing, report writing, and any follow-up requests from the bar.

If you received LSAT accommodations, that documentation does not automatically transfer to the bar exam. A new or supplemental evaluation may be required depending on the jurisdiction and how recently the prior testing was completed.

A brief planning consultation can clarify the requirements for your specific state bar.

State Bar Documentation Requirements and Common Delays

State bar examiners deny requests when documentation is incomplete, outdated, or not formatted to their jurisdiction's requirements. Denied applicants must reapply, which can delay bar admission by months, managing testing accommodations denials and red tape.

Bar Exam Frequently Asked Questions

Do LSAT accommodations transfer to the bar exam?

No. Each state bar has its own accommodations process. Prior LSAT accommodations may support the application but do not guarantee approval. A new or updated evaluation is typically required.

Which state bars do you write reports for?

Reports are formatted to the requirements of any U.S. state bar. Each jurisdiction has its own documentation framework, and the evaluation is structured accordingly.

How far in advance should I apply for bar exam accommodations?

Timelines vary by state. Most jurisdictions recommend applying 3 to 6 months before the exam date. A planning consultation can clarify the deadlines for your jurisdiction.

What documentation does the bar require?

Most state bars require a comprehensive evaluation with cognitive testing, a documented diagnosis, evidence of functional impairment, and a clear rationale linking the condition to specific accommodations. Academic records and prior evaluation reports strengthen the application.

What if my bar exam accommodations request is denied?

The evaluation includes one appeal letter. The appeal addresses specific feedback from the bar and clarifies any documentation gaps identified.

How long does the evaluation take?

Testing is one to two days. The draft report is delivered within 7 days. Rush turnaround is available.
